New mothers face challenges unique to their situation. Depression, social penalties, and economic strains are all associated with motherhood. The negative mental and social experiences faced by new mothers, often brought on by increased strain in the workplace and at home, are not generally understood by the wider population. In this lecture, Dr. Jonathan Platt, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Iowa, will discuss common issues affecting new mothers: gendered health patterns, the depression gap, and the aptly named "motherhood penalty." He will illustrate the importance of context and timing in gendered social roles for health outcomes.
